More town council anti-feeding messages

Deirdre from SPCA just called and discussed sending in a joint letter. Apparently, Selina from the education department gave a talk at a children's fair the other day, and there was a snakes and ladders game that included a square that said that feeding strays was bad and to move back 5 squares if you landed on it. In addition, there was a VCD produced that also said that feeding strays caused problems and was undesirable. The VCD was produced by a town council. I have not seen the VCD myself, but Deirdre suggested that the two societies write in together to give the letter more weight.

If the question is one of cleanliness, then vilifying feeding per se is really not the way to go.

I hope some sensible people up on the government seats realise that we have a "serious problem" here. We are promoting "violence" without insight to the damage we are contributing to the young who will manage us as we age. This is akin to severe psychosis without insight and if we don't diagnose it now and treat it with an antidote - compassion, we are in for a lunatic future!!

I have forgotten to mention that the snakes & ladders game (in boxes), were given out 'free' at the social responsibility carnivals.

I wonder when town council people hate cats so much?
They give me the impression that they are blood thirsty people.
Are they acting because they think they are singing the tune of the majority of people?
Are majority of people really cat haters?

I really do not believe that most people hate cats at all. It's just a vocal minority who do - probably like the people who LIKE cats. The rest of the people don't really have much opinion, but few would support killing them.

I would like to speak for the other side of the fence, because I was on that side before. I used to be very upset when I see feeders come around to feed cats, because I thought that they were encouraging the cats to be lazy and dependent. I thought that if the cats were left hungry, maybe they would go after the numerous rats that had proliferated in our estate!

I remember actually writing to the AVA (and CWS too, if I remember correctly) asking it about its policy with regard to cat feeding.

It was only after I stumbled upon this blog that I realised how mistaken my views were. I realised that whether or not the cats are fed have no relation to whether or not they would go for the rats. The feeders are also very responsible; they feed discreetly, and they clean up after they are done. I also learnt about TNR and began to notice that all the cats in our area are sterilised! Thus, my view of the cat feeders begin to change.

I've come to believe that responsible feeding is the way to go. However, many people equate feeding with rats and cockroaches. It's not cruelty or hatred - it's merely ignorance. They don't realise that there are people who consciously try not to make a mess. They also don't know that even if you starve the cat, it will not go after the rat.

Besides, rats and cockroaches are there not because the cat or the feeder (if responsible) is dirty - they're there because we human beings are. Sadly a lot of us are blind to it.

BTW, somebody left a pile of human faeces at our stair landing, AGAIN. It's not the first time nor will it be the last. Can I put that on the snakes and ladders too - pang sai on lift-landing=move back 10 squares!!!

I agree there is not enough publicity about what tip-ear means and the effort behind each tip-ear cats. So far the reaction of gaping "kay-poh's" during our trapping session have been positive when I explained what we were doing and some were shocked when I said that complaints to TC meant the cats get killed.
I think this "killing cats" ideation has not gone into the heads of TC officers who would like to make themselves believe that pest control will "remove" the cats. If there is anyone who can video-tape the cats as they are being caught, transported to AVA and then the fear as they are being killed, I cannot believe that it can't convert some of these officers into developing more compassion on their disbursement of actions towards cats.

Mrs Budak - your comment made me really glad I started this blog! Thank you!

I agree with both Mrs Budak and Vegancat that it's a question of people not knowing about TNR and sterilisation.

I also agree that when I was showing someone how to use a cat trap that a lot of people gathered around to watch, and all of them were saying it was a good thing to sterilise when they learnt what we were doing.

Is the snakes and ladders game a SR Carnival spin off or a game as part of Town Sparkles. If it is the latter, I guess alot of us will be affected - since Town Sparkles project is island wide

SPCA and CWS should do their joint letter without delay. A companion letter should go to the press to discourage the TC's from ignoring the matter or lying about it.

Dawn - yes, it sounds funny but my mother was given a box. It was wrapped up neatly in the town council's wrapper.

E-Cat - sorry, i am not certain if it is part of Town Sparkles.
