The New Paper story

Crazy Cat Lady story

Here's the story about the crazy cat ladies. My quote that I did not think that this had anything to do with cats, or women per se was not mentioned. I don't think it fit into what they wanted said.

Also I love the contention that the number of community cats has 'increased'. Nowhere in the article does it state how they came to this conclusion.

Thanks Mrs Budak for sending this in.

I wonder if the "HDB spokesman" was misquoted when s/he said "Cats are nomadic and cause problems when they shed their fur. But approved breeds of dogs are allowed as they are easily carried in confined spaces like lifts." This looks like an answer for the sake of answering. Besides errors of fact (that cats are nomdic), it doesnt really address the question "why aren't cats allowed in HDB flats".

HDB routinely says that cats are nomadic and cause problems with fur in their letters.

the article is clearly biased, for example choice of word like "obsession".

think this crystal chan has a problem with her neighbour?

HDB is not the authority to comment on pets. AVA should be the one. Do they say the same thing - that cats are nomadic?

The same "nomadic" reason was given by VB during the SARS crisis when request to let HDB dwellers adopt the cats off the streets in a frenzy to deciminate them. This was in response to a MP's call to catlovers to bring the cats home but not realizing that cats were not allowed into 90% of homes here.
This is the kind of "world class" mentality we have here with regard to animal issues - totally ignorant and "don't care" attitude because "animal lovers are in the minority anyway".

The famous "arrowing" game still goes on. When asked about decision on such issues as allowing cats in HDB or reinstating TnRM, AVA will arrow TC, TC will arrow AVA, AVA will arrow HDB and HDB will arrow AVA.
Ping and pong..and round and round.

AVA does not endorse that view about cats being nomadic. Neither did any of the more than 30 vets we approached. However, HDB still trots this out every once in a while.

i thought that HDB spokesman's line was incredibly dumb. aren't cats just as small and can be easily carried?

right. "cats are nomadic." hah. so many cat owners i know don't allow the cats out of the house! the cats themselves have no desire to roam around either.

dogs shed too. and i cannot believe how much they shed. surely...the amount shed is way more than a cat's?!

HDB should stop trotting this line out. it just makes them sound stupid. time to revise rulings that don't make sense.

ohh...sorry. this is singapore. how to do that??? we've only just started on the death penalty. too much to be asking them to revise rulings about animals/animal welfare.

I love this quote:

"Madam Ramlah and Madam Wong fit the stereotype of a cat lover. Most tend to be women. And one cat is seldom enough."

So the journalist knows that it's a stereotype and persists in perpetuating it???

Talk about poking yourself in the eye.
