But I didn't WANT to feed them

I just spoke with a town council officer and the feeder from this morning who is wishing all manner of retribution on him. The feeder just called again to say that she has taken to feeding the crows for the last year, in addition to the cats. Now she doesn't WANT to feed the crows, mind you. She is doing this because the crows are following her around. The crows recognise her. When she is on holiday, they do not come, but wait for her to come back because they recognise her. Plus, according to her relatives, perhaps she is obligated to feed them because she owes them something in her last life.

The officer told her that perhaps she can just change her feeding spot (both of them agree on this) so that it is not so obvious that the whole of crows are following her. This feeder however says she does not want to do so. She also does not want to feed the crows so she told me she asked the officer to send people down to shoot them. She says it is up to the authorities to take care of the problem.

I told her since she does not want to feed the crows to just stop. The feeder says that it is not possible. They may attack her.

In addition, she says feeding the cats is also becoming a problem. If not for the cats, she would not need to pray to her Gods so many times a day to protect them. This is the first time I've heard cats blamed for forcing people to pray.

So I told her that there is such a thing as consequence. No one forced this woman to feed the crows. I told her no one put a gun to her head - she CHOSE to do so If she didn't want to, she shouldn't have, and now she has to deal with the fall out. She can use a water spray and shoot it at them for example since she doesn't want to feed them. Complaining that she doesn't want to feed them, while continuing to do so, and not of course being able to control the population, doesn't help. So when she really doesn't want to feed them in a few months, they're going to be even MORE crows 'attacking' her. Also, since she talks all the time about retribution, I told her that if as she says, she is feeding the crows because she owes them, what is going to happen when she orders them killed?

The officer said he is fine with her feeding the cats, but her feeding of the crows is attracting more unwanted attention for the cats too and that if she does not do it more discretely, the cats are going to get affected to.

Anonymous is right - a few irresponsible people behaving badly isn't just bad for the cats, it's bad for the responsible caregivers. Of course people shouldn't pre-judge other people based on feeding cats, but chances are, if the officer deals with one or two feeders like that, he's going to think ALL feeders are the same.

I think this lady needs help, she really needs help from IMH and I am serious. She is not stupid and the way she is saying that the crows know her etc.... I have seen this before.. a friend overdosed on designer drugs and after that... she can talk to every animal... and she "knows" the dog is speaking to her etc. It took a long time and lots of counsuelling to bring her back to normal.... Maybe can bring up to TC that this is one raving lunatic....

Wow! What a set of "logical" thinking from this feeder. Admire Dawn's patience in handling this kind of people. If it was me, I will probably be botak now from tearing my hair in exasperation.

Why feed the crows? The crows can feed on worms from the earth and seeds from the trees. They know how and where to look for food. This woman is crazy. Feeding the crows will only help to spread bird flu. Better tell her to stop immediately. She is causing a hell hazard to everyone.

She sounds a little nuts, but the odd thing is that I've met people who think like her. It seems to be a very Chinese mental framework of life.

I wonder what Buddhist monks think of sterilisation. Would be interesting to put her with one.

Mezzo - we have a quote from a Buddhist monk on our sterilisation brochure. Perhaps the Buddhists here can also enlighten us?

In defence of the Crows:

They have been proven as a highly intelligent creature, capable of even fashioning a hook from a piece of wire so that it could "fish" out a small basket of food from a tube. They have pick-pocketed from closed bags, and have been shown to have acute recognition capabilities.

Therefore, barring this woman's ludicrous mindset about feeding, she may not be on designer drugs after all. The crows are perfectly capable of recognising her as their food provider. Just as they would recognise a person who has tried to attack them.

Herein lies the problem. She is attracting unwanted attention to the crows, and inadvertantly to the cats she feeds, thereby directly, causing their deaths. What merit can there be in this act?

By the way, Aunti Wie, there is NO avian flu in S'pore. It's not the crows we should pin the blame on. Or any animals for that matter.

It's always the human hand that brings about diseases. The Plague came about because Europeans killed almost all their cats. Today's BSE (mad cow disease) was brought about by humans introducing animal protein into the cattle feed.

Chickens and pigs do not ask to be cramped in tiny cages under inhuman battery farming and be injected with growth hormones and antiiotics.

And civet cats were never meant for the dinner table.

So how do diseases come about? Ask man. Stop blaming the animals.

You're right Mr Giggles - I don't doubt that they do recognise her, and they might try and get food from her if she stops. However she DID start feeding them, and now she doesn't want to - I'm sure the number have grown since she started and she's bringing attention to them AND the cats.

The officer actually asked if she could just change feeding location, but she refused.

In my opinion, this woman is definitely not a Buddhist, or at best a pseudo-Buddhist or a misguided Taoist. It seems obvious that she's a little mad.

Buddhism does talk about karma, but not in the way that this woman had believed.

WTF. WHY did she start doing this in the first place if she doesn't want the crows to follow her? All she is going to accomplish is to get them killed, through her own stupidity or from the complaints of neighbours. What kind of merit can she possibly attain from this kind of disgusting behaviour???? Why bother to earn an animal's trust and friendship when you are eventually going to get it killed?? It is betrayal of the vilest kind.

The only thing she should do now is this: FIRST: STOP. FEEDING. IGNORE them when they beg for food. Right now they unfortunately recognize her as a 'friend'.(Yes, they can indeed recognize individuals.) When no food is forthcoming they will leave her alone. And NO, they are not going to attack her for no reason.

D'OH! I believe I can post my previous rant against that kind-deeds-and-merit-credit anonymous in the other post. Just replace every occurance of kind deeds and merit credit with the prayer stuff. =P

IF only we can get a line with the divinity crowd, or do you think even a workshop in sacrosanctic ambience won't help much with waking people like this?

Please tell her to simply leave them alone and they will do the same. It is the best thing she can do for them.

Thank you.

Maybe she can disguise herself as a scarecrow while she feeds the cats! Why won't she use her brain and feed at night instead!
