Cats in a yard

So the woman who wrote in today about tossing the cats at the market wrote in again. She said that her neighbours are really annoyed. I asked her why she didn't just get them sterilised. She says that she's just going to stop feeding, and that if the neighbours call the AVA then there's nothing she can do.

I told her if she sterilises them NOW then she can at least control the population. She keeps insisting that they are not her cats and she cannot be responsible for sterilising them - but she CHOSE to feed them. I told her that if she sterilises them then they will not reproduce.

She says that her neighbours are annoyed with her now and she doesn't know what to do. She says they will be calling the AVA she thinks. I said that if she had sterilised them when she first started feeding this would not have gotten to out of hand. Now she says not to worry, there are male cats in the estate so she thinks the survival rate of the kittens is going to be very low.

So I asked her - wasn't she doing this to be KIND to the cats? Now she's got them eating in her yard, annoying her neighbours and she's hoping that they somehow all drop dead so they don't cause HER a problem? Poor cats - they would have been better off hungrier but alive.

This is the kinda person I label... BITCH!

Can reveal where she from?

She's living in a private estate in a house. Sigh.

Wait... she's going to abandon the kittens in two weeks' time at the market? How does she expect them to fend for themselves? And she's actually confident they're going to be killed by adult males in the area?

Can't sterilise, upset with upset neighbours, but no qualms feeding, and none in her brilliant plan to just stop?

I wonder if she even understand the concept of logic.

Well I guess if they don't get killed by the cats, then she can dump them at the market. She says she feels so 'helpless'.

Would you mind telling her that abandoning pets is illegal and she can be fined for each kitten she dump?

Also tell her that people nabbing cat abusers and she will have her ass in jail very soon.

Now I feel an uncontrollable round of hysterical laughter coming on. She is the Almighty compared to the kittens who are the true helpless ones, imo. She has the power of life/death over newborn kittens, newborn kittens she could have prevented from being birthed, i might add.

How can 2-week old kittens survive on their own? That is impossible, period.

This woman is impossinle, period!

When I told her the kittens when dumped in the market were likely to be rounded up, now she says that the male cats may kill them. Or the neighbours may trap. So either way - no abandonment. I don't know what she's going to do next as she hasn't replied to my last email.

Any idea how many kittens or cat she intend to dump?

Fiona - she mentioned four. Think they were just born yesterday.

How can we help regarding this case?

Help? I really don't know Mary. She doesn't want the cats in her yard now - or she says her neighbours don't. Without the mother cat, what are the chances the kittens will survive? I don't think she's going to consider keeping the cats even if they are sterilised.

You know I just counted that between January and now I wrote her more than 50 emails.

Oh my! The kind of mentality this woman has. I wonder WHY she feeds the cats in the first place, since she's so ready to set the kittens out to die now.

Dawn, first thgs first. Can u tell her to STOP feeding as of now? Then the cats will not go to her hse anymore and by extension stop annoying her neighbours with their presence. Sounds like she's getting overwhelmed by the situation so she may comply.

As for the kittens, who are most at risk, can we find fosters for them and the mother cat? The kittens can be put up for adoption when the time comes and the mother adopted or sterilised and released. I cannot foster the kitties myself but I can help contribute to the cost.

This way this useless woman doesn't have to lift a finger.

50 emails??? And she's still SOP, inflicting herself on you and the cats?

Dawn, if there's an award for Patience and Equanimity, I'm lobbying for your nomination and win!

In any case if anyone wanna remove the kittens from her, to foster, please do not let her know. Just remove and let her bear with the guilt that the kittens have all died..... because of her...

Once she knows someone can take them away, she'll take things for granted.

Dawn, anyways to board the kittens??

Anonymous I think she wants to stop feeding anyway. It's really kind of you to offer to sponsor the cost, but Fiona is right - it wouldn't do to let her know because she'll take it for granted. She is more than happy to pass the 'problem' on to someone else, and by doing so it means that she has even less to feed bad about.

The problem is I only know the general areas she lives in (Seletar) but not the exact address.

Any chance in her reading these entries? She must be made to know all our sentiments. Or is she too thick to
even consider herself righteous.

I feel positively embarressed to have an estate that has a feeder who is also a caregiver, who has sterilised all the cats. There are unsterilised ones at the edge, but they're living in the jungle and their impact has so far been minimal.

The area that does have a cat problem is unfortunately several bus stops away - and yes, centred around a market.

I think I'll go and chat with that caregiver - been awhile since I've done that.

Hey Dawn, I agree and support calsifer in nominating for you to win MOST PATIENT PERSON OF THE YEAR, heck, make it the CENTURY!

I certainly can't be in your position dealing with MORONS day in day out to the likes of people like this backyard lady, the scarecrow egomaniac, the difficult TC, etc. I would probably be committed to IMH right now!!!!!

What is this lady talking about??? She wants to dump 2-week old kittens? And is nonchalent about them being killed by other male cats? Sending to their death sentence either way.

And the other anonymous one who wrote about feeding for merit then leaving it to fate??? That's entrapment! It's exactly how the 2 gay men were enticed by undercover cops to have a sex romp and asked to bring drugs then being busted for "trafficking"!!! Fair? I don't think so.

Why are people so myopic? Don't they ever think through the consequences of their actions?

They are NOT being kind. They are only satiating their selfish need to FEEL as if they are doing some good deed. It really isn't about the cats at all. It's all about them.

They are the ones who give reason and justification for the "culling" of cats. They are the ones who are more guilty than the ones who complaint because they give the latter reason to do so.

My disgust has shifted from complainants to the irresponsible feeders and self-professed "animal lovers" who think nothing of enticing these animals to their eventual death through their selfish needs and deeds.

These are the ones who ought to be in jail too!

You know Mr Giggles - I have to agree that sometimes I feel extremely frustrated with the feeders. After all, these are supposed to be people who LOVE the cats - they should be the easiest ones to convince, but yet they're not.

Anonymous - strangely she's gone silent since my last email to her when I asked her how exactly she was being kind.

Same situation here. This aunty feeder at AMK North lugs 20 cans of food a night and she feeds from blocks to blocks. But what's the point. She keeps feeding and the cats keep producing and multiplying like football teams.
I asked her to sterilise but she refused and couldn't be bothered. She feeds until she dies and more and more kittens will be born. I hv sterilised some cats for her and asked her to sterilise some. She must help herself because that is her area. She cannot expect other feeders to sterilise her cats as other feeders have their own areas to look after. This aunty feeder is getting impatient and she vents her frustration on us. She is borrowing money from every feeders. She has run out of money to feed her cats. She is in debts and most of her cats are so
skinny and sicked although she feeds them every nite. Her cats have produced so many kittens and she has no choice but to abandon some of them else where. I am very worried for the cats. The TC might just pick up all these cats and kittens since there are so many of them now at the void decks.

I call this stupidity.

Anonymous I'm very sorry to hear this - and you're absolutely right. After a while, people tend to run out of money so the cats end up in bad health because (1) they're not sterilised and live in this large colony, which means of course that they are more prone to feline specific diseases and (2) the feeder cannot afford to look after them anymore. So the cats who now rely on the feeder for food are now eating less anyway because the feeder can't afford it. Nor can the feeder pay for medical treatment for the sick cats. So the health of the colony declines.
