I saw this pet shop and dropped a poster by them too. I'm so happy more shops have signs like this!

I read somewhere...perhaps in this blog, that the trend of pet shops in the US is NOT only NO SALE Of LIVE PETS but shops setting aside a corner for adoption of rescued animals.

Yes that's true. Plus a lot of animals do get adopted that way.

That's a great sign! I do feel sorry when I see cute puppies and kittens in shops. Especially if these shops are unethical and sell from breeders who are as money-minded as they are rather than real animal lovers. Sadly I know of shops like this.

Hopefully, we'll mature as a society that "recycles" rather than "new new new" all the time! :-)

As long as people buy pets as gift, there will be sales.

And Christmas is coming...

How do we "nicely" tell our nice petshops that we hope they will not sell "live pets"? Any suggestion?

There is no use because I suspect selling live animals is their main source of revenue. I once tried to talk to a pet shop owner about this but he insisted that he always tells his customers to return the pets to him if they no longer want them. The only effective way is through enforcement. Too bad that the officials in our AVA are adopting a "bo-chap" attitude towards this. Is it not ironic that one of their goals is to promote animal welfare?? I've read somewhere few years ago that even Bangkok is aiming to sterilise all stray dogs. Just can't help but feeling that our gahmen is not interested in anything that does not have any economic value. Huh, talk about a gracious society!! No wonder that our kids are getting more materialistic.

Anti-human actually when I was in the US and speaking with someone there, I was told that when a pet store opened in her town and was going to sell animals, she and other residents went down and told the pet store that they would appreciate if they didn't sell animals. They said they would be happy to support the shop as long as they didn't sell animals. The pet store decided not to sell animals.

You can make a difference with your money for example by supporting shops that don't sell animals.

Also it's kind of like the photocopying machine and the supplies - the reason people sell photocopying machines cheaply is that the refills and supplies are what keeps the companies in business. People might not buy a cat - but if they adopt one, that person is going to be your customer for the next 10 years!

Dawn, it's kind of difficult to not support shops that sell animals simply because I think 90% of the pet shops do sell. Those which do not sell live animals do not seem to have an extensive range of supplies. Thay also tend to sell at a higher price which I can't really afford. Does anyone know of shops here which don't sell live animals and charge a reasonable price for their supplies? If there is, I will gladly switch.

Hi Anti-Human, where is your location?

Hi Mary, I stay in the East. Have been getting supplies from Pets City at Koon Seng Road. They do delivery and at $1 for 1 can of Aristocat, it's really cheap. Got to scrimp and save as I'm also feeding strays. My own cats are on Science Diet.

Hi Anti-human, how about just telling your pet shop you don't agree with what they are doing? I agree right now there are not a lot of alternatives, but you can let them know that you'd be much happier if they stopped.

I believe Loving Pets along East Coast Road does not sell animals.

Hi Dawn, I will try but seriously I don't think it's going to work. Why should they care whether I'm happy or not. Profit margin is more important to them.....unless of course more people voice out to them. If I have an alternative, I will definitely boycott them and even march straight to their shop and tell them that I do not support what they are doing. I've been to Loving Pets and know that they do not sell live animals. In fact, ASD holds regular adoption drive there. Will ask about their pricing the next time I'm there.

So Mary, any good alternative?

Hi Anti Human, Dawn has a good recommendation if you are living in the East. I understand Loving Pets help the community cats too.

Anti-human - exactly we need more people to tell their pet shops. If everyone goes in and tells the pet shops that (1) they want them to stop selling animals and (2) that they would start going to pet shops that don't, someone who wants to make money will cotton on to the idea that that WILL bring in the money.

Yes, it has to be a concerted effort by all genuine animal lovers. Having just 1 or 2 people boycotting them will not affect their business much. Just a suggestion......since you have just dropped off the "No sale of Live Animals" posters at the pet shops, why not publish a list of such shops in your website or newsletter to encourage more people to patronise these "No Live Animals" shops?

Loving Pets is one that's bit around for a while, so are quite a few of the neighbourhood shops. The shops i saw yesterday is in Holland Village, next to the subway store. We made it a point at one point to leave our stuff only with people who didn't sell animals. Problem is pet shops here come and go - few stay open for a long time because they're all basically selling the same stuff.

Perhaps other people know?

Let's try and stick to shops we SHOULD patronise - I've deleted those with negative complaints, because they are potentially defamatory unless you have hard proof that what is happening is really going on. I'm not saying it ISN'T happening, but that when it comes to proving it in court, that's a different question.
