Press

We're getting a lot of reporters calling today for some reason. One is from a current affairs department, and two from different newspapers about different topics (the abuse case and about local NGOs). Been preparing responses with JaQ's help. I've explained twice today that we are not an animal rights group, but an animal welfare one.

Do the press or the public have any idea that there's a difference between an animal rights group and an animal welfare group? Or do they just hear words? Or assume that "rights" people are pushier and a bit wild-eyed, while "welfare" people are sob sisters who wouldn't say boo to a goose?

i suppose to be fair to the press this whole concept of active civic animal protection, whether through "rights" grps or "welfare" grps, is a rather new one here in s'pore.

of course the journalists cld have done some background reading, research, etc, but i wld rather focus on the fact that they ARE gaining awareness, learning (hopefully) and more importantly, educating the members of the public. i think it is actually somethg to feel optimistic abt. :)

I agree Anonymous - we're a little behind in that relation. As you said, it's good that people ARE aware that animal welfare & animal right groups exist now. I don't see all these stories being carried in the press in the past.

It isn't. Chua Mui Hoong wrote on it back in 2000.

Seems like there's a reporter who isn't doing his homework.
