Can they get rid of the lizards too?

I just spoke to a woman who called me and said that she had been complaining to the town council for some time to no avail. She claims that the cats in her area are making a lot of noise. She said that they are causing a nuisance. I explained that this means they are probably unsterilised and that it is important to get them sterilised and the cauterwauling and mating would stop as would the reproducing. She said she did not realise that cats stop mating once sterilised, and I told her this was why the population would decrease.

The situation would hopefully have been resolved there but unfortunately it seems she is scared of cats. She said the cats sometimes walk up near her in the void deck. I suggested she just stomp her feet and to stare at them, but she said that Singaporean cats are too brave to be scared by the stomping and she is too frightened to look at them. She asked why they can't be taken away. I explained new cats would come in. She asked why they cannot just be continually removed. I also told her the cats would be killed, which she said was not happening as they did not even trap the cats in the first place.

I told her that the TC may well have removed the cats but that new cats might be coming in. I explained we will do our best if there are volunteers there to keep the population under control, but that there would always be cats. She said her nephew was scared of them too. I said for example, that if I was frightened of lizards, I could not ask the town council to remove them. She interjected to say she was frightened of lizards too, and asked if THEY could be removed. I asked her if she was frightened of dogs and she quickly agreed. She said she walked out of her way to avoid her neighbour's house as there were dogs inside. I tried to tell her that the animals were far more frightened of her than she was of them as being larger and stronger, she seems to them far more of a threat. She said she cannot even bear to look at them.

It seems rather difficult to imagine how someone like that must go through life being constantly afraid. It's sad for her - but it also isn't fair to the animals to insist all of them be removed.

This is a classic one if only have it all recorded! and post it "live" somewhere to show everyboy just how how ridiculous some reasons are that cause the death of cats!

Get her to see a therapist, TC must be informed of her excessive fears.

Yes - plus she was telling me the cats are urinating on her floor (which is pretty high up). I told her it's likely they are someone's pets or someone is feeding them upstairs and she mentioned her neighbour has a cat. She said however that these cats that come up are so ugly no one could possibly want to keep them as pets.

I bet she doesn't go to the zoo. She sees the animals (if she does) from across the Mandai lake.

And anyway she needs psychiatric help... not a TC

You can't help but feel a bit sad for people like that. They seem to live in their own world. Nontheless i believe everyone has the opportunity to be enlightened. It depends on opportunity, and patience. Oh easier said then done. But it can happen.

Get the nephew away from this woman. She is a danger to anything alive! She is definitely one loonie and I hope the TC is intelligent enough to recognise one although I don't have much faith in TC officers!

Actually she called me directly! The TC probably just gave her my number.

I agree - people CAN get over their fear. And some people never do but it doesn't mean they want animals removed and killed either.

Everybody have their fear/phobia but it is usually one or two animals like snakes, cockroach etc. But cats, dogs, lizards is not reasonable. She should locked herself in a cage.

A lady who works as a cook in an elderly daycare centre, told me she was afraid of cats, yet every morning she will buy fresh fish with her own money, fry them and feed to a few community cats at the back of the kitchen. She will look at them lovingly from within the kitchen window. The cats sense her fear of them and have stopped following her after she put the shredded fish in paper bowls for them. I think this has to do with the kind nature of this lady.
Can't say the same for this lady in your posting except that she seriously needs counselling.

This lady could be suffering from something more serious than fear of cats, fear of lizards etc. No one is tormenting her other than herself.

she can be scared of smthg without hating it or seeking its destruction. this wanting to remove everythg for her own convenience without consideration of other ppl's feelings, not to mention the very lives of the creatures she wants removed, is selfish and unthinking.

There is also a lady I know who feeds cats everyday on her way home from work. Interestingly she is also afraid of the cats going too near her. She said they are dirty so she didn't want to touch them but she has a kind heart :B

Poor woman, she is living in constant fear.

The world is such a beautiful place. Such a pity, she is fearful of these beauty.

What a waste of life, it should be given to the animals who wish to live.

Hope the next world will be just cats and no bad humans. Humans should be ban from HDB flats instead, be sterilised and their their ears clipped.

I spoke to a colleague who sits on the town council as a member today. She stays in a flat and has a petting zoo at home and loves animals. She told me that the people who complain about cats really want something to be done about them, and they are exerting a lot of pressure on the TC. When we probed further and asked if the people who nag and complain are that FEW people, she said yes and these people have no tolerance for others' pets at all, even dogs. She said only a FEW is enough to make trouble for the TC, making life difficult for community cats to co exist. Maybe we should cull those few...

Profpig - that's our experience too. However the thing is this - I do think TCs should also be firm with these persistent complainants. They make the life of the TC difficult AND a disproportionate amount of taxpayers' money is spent pandering on these people. The thing is - they probably STILL won't be happy and will just find something else to complain about.

These FEW residents are the "neighbours from hell" that we pray will not move to cat-managed estates! If only there is a way to WARN these nasties that the CATS are here to stay whether you like it or not, so by all means, move in but shut up!

I like the Stone Soup cartoon on L18 of ST21Jan07.
If/When we appreciate the good things in life that we have (no matter how little) and give thanks, there will be a lot less complaints....and more "give".

People who are said to be "scared" of dogs, cats, lizards, flies, crows etc etc. Bigger physically and can complain, how to believe "scared"? Yet the white knight TC would cull innocent cats sitting around and crows flying around doing their own things.
I am "scared" of loan shark harassing me, how? One should slay ignorance and stupidity.

Loan sharks are real "fears" and cause damage to doors and walls of hdb flats. Do TCs help - besides repainting the walls?
Why selective help by TCs? Why not help real fears instead of imaginary "scared"?

This woman's fears match the descriptions in child-rearing manuals of children who need professional help. A child who fears that a particular dog will bite him is not phobic, but a child who cannot walk down the street because he might see a dog, and who cannot enjoy his picture-book because there is a picture of a dog in it, is not just fearful, but phobic, and in need of help. This woman is not a child whose parents can be urged to seek counselling for her, but if she is elderly perhaps a community social worker could be involved? She has some social contacts, witness the nephew, so is not completely isolated, but perhaps is lonely and tends to be fearful for that reason.
We do not know what her past experience may have been. But certainly she should not be making the rules for her neighbours. Would it be any use to ask the TC officers if there are befrienders in the estate who might help her?
