PM's Donation to Charity

I'm sure many of you have already read the Prime Minister's very generous decision to donate his pay rise for the next five years to charity. I wonder if animal welfare organisations might be the beneficiaries of his largess? Perhaps we can write in and ask if he might consider giving some money for sterilisation if not to a specific charity?

Hey Dawn, I think you should write in. I totally support it, no matter the amount of donation you may and can get.

I rather he donate to the non-government aided charities etc, rather than see him donate to NKF (eek!!??) or like President's Star Charity, which already has a "following".

I will vote for the PAP for as long as I live, IF the PM agrees to donate some of his $ to aid the homeless animals in our little homeland.

It would be real nice if some consideration and generosity are showered on animal welfare causes :)

A colleague told me a report that a senior White House official was stunned by news that Spore's PM earned 5x more than US President G.Bush.

A fresh 25.5 percent pay hike for PM Lee, boosting his salary to 2.05 mil/yr.

Bush gets paid $400K/yr, according to the White House. But maybe Bush shouldn't feel so bad.
The Singaporean's paycheck is 8x fatter than Japanese PM Shinzo Abe's.

I guess maybe we should work out for him the amount he should put into cat welfare :)

Sounds like to good idea.
I do wonder if donation has to be go to "good looking" charities where he thinks most people will approve. Will he think if donation to an animal org make him a laughing stock?

YES he needs to donate to animal welfare please.

Fat hope. Don't waste your time writing to him. Donating to cat sterilisation program will not boost his generousity status. How much $ did he give the citizen of more than 3 million. He reaped from his "kind" action so now, you pple have to shut up when he shouted pay increase first for himself and his father and then his father's followers. But let's face it, LKY did a good job and I have full of respect for him. As for his son...ha ha. but I have no choice to also called him PM Lee so long I want to live in Singapore. So if you pple want money, write to LKY instead. A better person will be Dr Lee Boon Heng who is a vet.

By the way, this minister pay hike thing and that our PM's pay is higher than Bush's... has been making major headlines on cables news channels like CNN, CNBC and even Fox News.

Probably another "non-reason" we are under the spot light...

Dawn, do you think Dr Lee Boon Heng will be relatively more compassionate?

13/4/07 1:26 AM

Well I don't know Dr Lee :) In addition only the PM has pledged to give the excess to charity. So let's ask him first - there is nothing to suggest he ISN'T compassionate towards animals.

Isn't it a bit brash to ask for money. Not pai-say? Surely a learned man like PM Lee is aware of the status, financially or socially, of the animal welfare here. Surely he reads the letters. He'll leave our 'plight'of having our hands tied when we want to do more for the community cats to ourselves, I think.
We must not emotionally black-mail him. He knows.

No lah, what so paiseh?
For the better future of community cats, any help given will be greatly appreciated.
Just ask lor. If want to give, give. If don't give, nevermind lor.

NOT at all an issue of "paisay". There's nothing brash in asking for money to help our animals. Being learned does not mean any more than just being learned. Oh please, this is NO emotional blackmail lah. This is only asking. Ask, and you may be given.

There is absolutely nothing to be paiseh or ashamed of for charities to ask for donations. Fund-raisers do this regularly, or else, they can eat "north-west wind" (西北风).

Anonymous, the PM may not have even heard of a small charity like CWS. If we don't ask and then we sit back and then wonder why no money comes our way, I think it's not being very pro-active.

As for emotional blackmail, I wouldn't dream of it! It's just asking politely. If he turns us down, I am sure he has his reasons, but if you don't ask, you'll never know.

Thanks for helping me deal with my 'pai-sayness. I really hope PMLee will hear the rep out and do something abt HDB regulations too.

Wah, didn't know Dr Lee Boon Heng was a vet. It seriously makes me wonder why he did not helped to speak-up for the poor innocent stray cats during the 2003 Sars Culling. Anyway, it would be very interesting if someone writes-in to MP Vivian Balaxxx to ask for his donation to any of the animal welfare organisations with a foot-note stating - "It's time to do something KIND to the animals, for the sake of the countless innocent furry souls who had died for nothing. Amen "

Yeap, I agree, there is nothing "pai say" about asking if PM is interested in donating to the CWS, and might as well, the SPCA.

If we "have this thought", don't be so surprise the bigger charity groups have probably already written in to be on a/some sort of "waiting list" liao!!

But I am quite sure he MUST have heard or read of the CWS and your work (Dawn), it is probably just that he does not have to, or has no personal dealings or interest with CWS, if you know what I mean, he is, the PM afterall, and have more pressing business, locally and international to deal with.

But again I say, no harm in asking, he might be "delighted" that such a small group (is CWS a small group??) would have approach him...

Good luck, wait for good news and cheers

No need to paisay. Just ask first. Don't give don't give lor. :P

Who knows? It might even boost PAP's stand with cat lovers ;)

wow...."pai-seh" about asking for donation?? Perhaps cats are culled because cat care-givers are just too pai-seh....what a word!!

hey paisay anonymous, actually i'm also the paisay-here-paisay-there sort, that's why i'm taking this chance to tell you and myself that we must not always feel paisay...we must remind ourselves to be courageous! overly paisay can be inflicting and agonising.

cats are culled because many men are evil. not because some of us cat caregivers are more paisay-inclined. no need to bash others.

Perhaps care-givers are such nice people and too pai-seh to make their views known; perhaps the authorities knowing that care-givers are too pai-seh to complain; perhaps that is why cats are rounded up (by "evil" men)without much regards to care-givers' dedications to their charges - Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps.

It must be very sad & disheartening for responsible caregivers whose cats are rounded up and culled. It is just amazing they never give up and continue to feed and health-managed responsibly.
Many thanks to these caregivers who
make those culled cats' lives less miserable from pain and hunger in their short time on earth.
Paisay or not paisay, caregives rules!!!!

That's right, no need to bash me abt pai-say. So many times, I trap cats not from my own area for sterilisation and pai-say to ask for money from feeders. They can always tell me to mind my own area, but their thanks sometimes was just good enuf. Then I pai-say to claim from CWS knowing how much they r already doing and spending for the cats. I always hope, hope is a good thing, that ppl 'chi-tong' pay or give lor.

I think at the end of the day, let's just remember that there's no harm asking. Anonymous, please do write in if you do need help. Let's make a deal - don't be 'paiseh' to ask and we won't be 'paiseh' if we really don't have the money and will tell you so!

Blogger Dawn said...

ej is right - the caregivers do a very good job. However I do think caregivers have a really important function beyond looking after the cats and that's speaking up for them. The cats cannot obviously and the caregivers are the only ones who can and do give them a voice.

If that is the case, why not write to everyone in the cabinets including the opposition parties. Cast a larger net and who knows we may get better donation.

maybe everyone should start writing to ur own MP to ask for donations for own neighbourhood.

If our PM is real nice towards animals welfare, he will have done something to the culling of cats, AVA policy for sterilization and HDB rules on cats. So I guess it is a 100% NO if u even asked. I do not think it is paiseh to ask for donation but it depend on whom you are asking for donation as that other person may think as a bad joke instead esp if he think nothing of cats or animals life.

Anonymous as far as I know the PM is the only one who has said he will put aside some money for charity.

J - none of those portfolios are under the PM. For one thing, there are other ministers dealing with it. He may not be aware of it for one thing, or may not realise people feel strongly about it. Maybe people were too 'paiseh' to ask about it in the past so he may think people are fine about those policies too.

OK to ask for donations, in fact every body should write in and ask.
We are not beggars, we are giving them a chance to express their kindness and generosity.

Even if they reject and give template replies like ' cats are nomadic and nuisance etc. '

Community cats will still survive because many ofeeders out there, without the financial means are able to sustain them miraculously all these years.
