Dogs and Cats United

Dogs and Cats United
Originally uploaded by dawnkua.

Ricky from ASD and I were invited to sit in on a meeting by some individuals who wanted to look at the HDB rule on why larger dogs and cats are banned. As this grew out from one of the dog forums, the participants I think were more familiar with the issues regarding dogs, though I believe they would welcome participation from some people who are more familiar with the issue with regards to cats. They intend to meet up again to discuss the issue further.

Ricky and I were discussing how we were glad that more individuals are coming forward and not necessarily waiting for welfare groups to take the lead. In this matter certainly, we were told that one reason the ban hadn't been overturned was because they hadn't had requests from people who wanted to own cats! I do think they've had their fill of hearing the welfare groups talk :)

To all HBD residents who want to the BAN on cats to be removed, write to Mr Mah Bow Tan
and b cc to cws (who can keep track) that states simply
"I am a HBD resident and I would like the ban on cats to be removed so that I can have cats as animal companions."
State your name, address and telelphone number.
Let's get going!

if there is a forum on this matter, i would like to attend ...

those who already have cats in the flat are afraid to speak up, bcos they fear the answer will be 'no' plus the authorities will want the cats removed ... so they keep cats on the quiet ...

Yea,

I would love to speak up about it, but what if HDB decided to be bastards and came and confiscate all my cats from me?

It has happened before.

To do such a survey, the government needs to guarantee that they will not crack down on us, publicly assure us.

You live with your beloved cats for years and one day they come knocking on your door and said you can't keep cats in HDB.

Are there benefits in banning your cats? Answer is nope.
Just a slavery clause hatched ages ago by dead officials who left behind a cruel legacy for STUPID ...

belle - if they write to us again, I'll hook them up with you if you can drop me an email.

Anonymous, in our last petition we stated that the people who signed either wanted to keep cats, or supported other people keeping cats. Of course if everyone DID write in who had cats, I seriously doubt they would have the ability to enforce the bylaw either.

The problem is, they require your home address, so even if they randomly chose certain units to do spot checks on, and unluckily if they chose my unit, that would be disaster.

If I were HDB, and I wanted to crack down on illegal cat owners, this is one of the best way of catching them.

I think HBD is more than happy to let FEAR stops them from considering removing the ban. Our cats will always be illegal and at risk. There are creative ways to dodge the officers, even if they "chiap pak arr nee eng" to come and check on cats, when there are no complaints.

That depends on how many cats you have. I got 8, and I find it hard to hide them as they are so used to roaming freely in the house, that confining them anywhere would cause them to start mewing.

Also, I had a situation with HDB catching me before in my previous place.

They would stand guard and watch from a distance, where you can't see them, when they suspect something. Then come to your house and catch you red handed and give you time limit to get rid of your cats.

I am paranoid, because i work 6 days and 12 to 1t long hours everyday and an incident like this really really affects me bad, and make me screw up in my job, I get really stressed up worrying if I have to vacate my house to save my babies.

thanx dawn, i'll drop u a line later ...

hey people ... lets pray hard such a nightmarish thing won't happen to our indoor cats that don't disturb neighbours ...

anyway my kitty is good at hiding, hee hee ... even i myself can't find him sometimes ...

when he was neutered, i got his ear tip clipped, so he can also pass off as a community cat until the HDB officers buzz off ...

anyway let's keep our fingers crossed such a terrible thing won't happen ... also govt officers are already so bogged down with work they won't do 'extra work' unless theres a complaint ...

and lastly, may the MIWs change their outdated mindset abt cats & animals ...

One of the things that is interesting is that the bylaw is only selectively enforced - ie when someone complains. If enough people spoke up, I don't think the HDB would be able to check every household frankly because I do think tons of people DO have cats.

Do you think it is ok to simply send the email without your home address?

Would that really be less credible?

I think as long as you put your full REAL name that's pretty credible :)
