Letter in Lianhe Zaobao

Thanks to Kootoo Monster for sending this in. Some of you may remember the letter from last week about the person who wrote into Lianhe Zaobao to complain about how dirty the cats were.

Here's a response. According to Kootoo Monster, the editor mentioned that they received several letters on the topic but chose to print this one because it was representative and reminded people not to make personal attacks.

Here's my bad translation - anyone please feel free to correct it :-

The writer basically says that he or she is Singaporean born and bred and that he or she has seen several people feeding and clearing up after the cats. The writer points out that this is not something done once or twice but day after day and that these caregivers spend time, effort and money bringing the cats to the vet and one cannot help but feel touched by their actions.

The writer goes on to add that he or she has seldom seen cats jump on tables to steal food and asked some friends as well if they had, and no one had seen this happening. The person goes on to add that cats do not bother people unless people bother the cats and says the most important thing to worry about is hygiene, and should wash their hands frequently and this was the main thing.

The writers adds that he or she does not particularly like cats but said that he or she thinks that people should leave the cats alone, or one day the only place people will see cats is in the zoo.

I'm sorry they didn't print out reply or any of the many replies you guys sent in, but I'm very glad so many people wrote in that the editor commented on it!

Can CWS's letter and other unpublished letters be printed online here for all to see?

now that the translation is out, I am annoyed to read the part saying community cats would one day be in the zoo. You mean total destruction and only a handful would be in the zoo because because care about cats in the streets and some tables have their modesty outraged and whole society terrified to the point that lack of personal hygiene like hand washing can lead to cats being in the zoo?

Writer had nothing better to do, should be locked up in the ' unwanted section ' of the zoo.
An irrational letter invites irrational response.

The government has to bear the blame for the negative perspective of the community animals - dogs and cats. AVA is nothing but a "furnace" for an endless piles of cats and dogs. It is ironic that it has a dept called Animal Welfare.
Yes it will be too late when the whole island is just one dull soul-less lifeless concrete jungle with no community animals around except the our own kind! Nightmare comes true!!

Sure Vegancatsg - we can post ours at least :)

Anonymous, I think what the writer meant was that if people keep complaining, then all the cats are going to be killed, and one day, they will only be seen in zoos.

Anonymous the department that handles control is actually Animal Control. Animal welfare doesn't do trapping and the rest of it.

Animal Control is one hell of a place in Pasir Panjang. Animal Welfare exists in the same building, 20 steps away. But who is the boss for routine killing and why is the welfare not able to co-ordinate humane solutions?

It's one slaughter house located inside a welfare building or welfare swallowed by slaughter spirits? I can throw up if I drive pass the place. Curse.

It's a very strange system whereby both departments are on the same level - ie I don't believe Animal welfare can tell animal control what to do or vice versa. Also if you look it up on the Singapore Government Directory website, you'll see that Animal Welfare has far less officers and personnel than Control does.

I8f animal welfare is so pathetic, than what can they do? Exists just for showtime? Killing/culling is a big department, about 45 staff vs 5 staff for welfare?

Hope someday, some people with souls will kick the holocaust lethal gas department out. The bad karma air stinks even when I am typing this out, let alone driving along Pasir Panjang.
