Mediation and Radio programme

Just back from a town council meeting which also became a Mediation and flyering exercise. E_Cat rang me just as I was leaving to tell me about a programme on Class 95 FM this morning that seemed to be about why cats shouldn't be allowed in HDB flats - and from what I heard some of the information was downright wrong. Anyone else heard it? Will blog a bit more about this in a minute.

I actually parked and stayed in the car, have my pay docked just to listen :

1. The always-trying-so-hard-very-irritating Glenn Ong kept harping that he didn't know that cats are not allowed in HDB flats.

2. Flying Dutchman (the more mature and decent other DJ) kept repeating that it is against the law to keep cats inside HDB flats.

3. Started because Dr Tan wrote in to the press about alternative solutions for the AVA...(?, i haven't read today's papers.)

4. For feline caregivers, Glenn's taking the good-guy role by acting stupid as to why cats are not allowed in HDB flats.

5. So the suffering bad-guy role fell on FD who had to explain how stray cats would pee and poop and how they will run into people's flats and how all these is so super unfair.

6. What was misleadingly mentioned is that cats cannot be confined and MUST (?!?!) be let out to roam. So this is the reason why cats are not allowed in HDB flats.
Unless we are talking about sick depraved animal abusers who hoard and lock cats inside red vans, dirty toilets and cages, it is NOT true that cats must roam. This is absurd. In addition, while it is true that cats tend to be nocturnal, i have 2 cats who sleeps with me everyday from 11am to 6.30am.

7. The DJ duo then invited callers to text in their
sentiments/opinions and whatnots.

8. So, predictably, all the nonsense and tragically misinformed sms came. (Btw, 3 cheers for the person who smsed that FD is an idiot who should change his gate. Haha, while i agree with FD that it's not his responsibility, that sms was funny! ha)

9. In all, my concern is : with this over the radio advertisement that having cats is illegal in HDB so loudly (and from this ATSHVI Glenn Ong's big mouth), those nasty ones will be all out to do their neighbours in.

10. It was obvious to me from this morning's radio show that many, many , many people (including those who grew up with cats and dogs and those who keep pets such as jack russell terriers with dessert-related names) ultimately, view felines as pests.

some time back, there was another lady DJ, Vernetta Lopez who spoke about animal welfare on air. she was really good. she "warn" adults who are buying animals just to pacify their kids to think twice about the irresponsible act. she then half-jokingly-half-seriously added that buying pets then dumping them later IS GOING TO SPOIL YOUR KARMA. i thought this was very good because many of us here in Singapore needs to be timely warned of the repercussion (read: retribution) we have to face when we disregard the welfare of animals just because we think that we have the money and we walk on two legs and our kids are everything over everything. so maybe that weekend, someone was going to buy a puppy for her spoilt child will think twice about doing so. (Vernetta, if you are reading this, thank you for your radio show and taking the extra step to help and lend a voice to the many many suffering animals here in Singapore. I actually wrote you a card but never got round to posting it. You're good. And you look better than ever these days! Yes!)

Thank you Orange for that very concise summary. I heard the SMS about how all cats are a nuisance - and that someone claiming a baby was scratched by a cat across the face (which Glenn Ong mentioned sounded like an exaggeration).

I also heard the Flying Dutchman saying that pet owners should train their pets and than saying that Glenn Ong's dog was well trained because he loved him enough or something to that effect. The point is owners need to be responsible. Animals per se are not to blame - and loving an animal is not the same as being responsible for one. One cannot equate love with responsibility. Often the two do NOT go hand in hand. If that were the case, then a badly behaved child in public must behave badly because his parents don't love him enough

I will call in next time and say more cats should be staying in HDB flats, people need cats not more anti pets law. What does all this DJ know... about time to have a pet station.
